Microsoft's "Critical" update for "unacceptable" symbols

Today I checked the kids' computer (which runs XP) for downloaded Microsoft updates, and discovered this:
SUMMARY

A critical update is available to remove unacceptable symbols from the Bookshelf Symbol 7 font that is included with Microsoft Office 2003. The Bookshelf Symbol 7 font is contained in the Bssym7.ttf file.

Naturally, I just had to look:

As far as I can tell, the applicable Microsoft Knowledge Base Article (833407) never states just which symbols are "unacceptable". That's left as an exercise for the reader. This update was discussed at the Chat11 Wiki.
